PS5 DualSense Mods and Upgrades: Shells, Buttons, LEDs, and Performance Kits

By Epoch Ctrllrs

The DualSense is a brilliant controller out of the box, but the aftermarket modding scene has turned it into a platform. Custom shells, tactile button upgrades, LED lighting, performance trigger mods — there’s a deep ecosystem of parts available to make your controller look and feel exactly how you want it.

The catch, as always with the DualSense, is compatibility. Not every mod fits every BDM revision. This guide covers the major categories of mods available, who makes them, what they cost, and — crucially — which controller versions they work with.

Custom Shells

A full shell swap is the most dramatic cosmetic change you can make. It replaces the front faceplate, back shell, and decorative trim, transforming a standard white or black controller into something unique. Shells are available in solid colours, translucent/clear finishes, textured coatings, glow-in-the-dark materials, and even licensed designs.

Shell Compatibility Groups

This is the single most important thing to understand before ordering shells. DualSense shells fall into two main compatibility groups:

Group A — BDM-010 / BDM-020: The original launch controllers share a shell design. eXtremeRate sells full shell kits specifically for these revisions. If you’re buying from Alibaba or other suppliers, look for listings that explicitly state “BDM-010/020” compatibility.

Group B — BDM-030 / BDM-040 / BDM-050: These three revisions share a shell design. This is the compatibility group you’ll see most commonly in current aftermarket listings, as these are the most prevalent controllers in circulation. eXtremeRate’s “Luna Redesigned” full shell sets target this group.

BDM-060: Too new for comprehensive testing. eXtremeRate has acknowledged potential compatibility issues and is actively testing. Hold off on ordering shells for BDM-060 controllers until confirmed compatibility data is available.

Cross-group fitting: Some individual components (particularly front faceplates) are sold as compatible across BDM-010 through BDM-050. These are usually simpler external pieces that don’t interact with internal mounting points. Full shell kits that include the internal frame structure are more revision-specific.

What’s in a Full Shell Kit?

A complete shell kit typically includes the front faceplate, back shell, decorative side trim, touchpad cover, and a pry tool for disassembly. Higher-end kits may also include replacement face buttons, d-pad, L1/R1 bumpers, and thumbstick caps in matching colours or materials. These button-inclusive kits are the most practical option, as they ensure visual consistency and avoid the need to transfer tiny plastic parts from your old shell.

Where to Buy

eXtremeRate is the dominant player in the DualSense shell market. Their product range is extensive, quality is generally good, and compatibility is clearly listed per BDM revision. They sell through their own site, Amazon, and other retailers. Prices typically range from £15-30 for a full shell kit.

Alibaba suppliers (Guangzhou Weiya, Shenzhen-based OEMs, and others) offer shells at lower per-unit prices, particularly in bulk. Quality varies more than eXtremeRate, and compatibility information in listings can be vague or optimistic — a listing might claim “BDM-010/020/030” in the title but only show BDM-020 in the photos. Always confirm with the supplier before ordering, and consider ordering a sample first.

Amazon and eBay carry both eXtremeRate products and various unbranded shells. Check reviews carefully and verify BDM compatibility claims before purchasing.

Installation Difficulty

A full shell swap takes approximately 25-35 minutes. No soldering is required — it’s entirely a mechanical disassembly and reassembly job. You’ll need a small Phillips screwdriver and a plastic pry tool. The most delicate part is handling the ribbon cables (touchpad, bumper, and microphone connectors) during disassembly. Take photos as you go, work slowly, and you’ll be fine.

Button Upgrades

Clicky Face Buttons (Microswitch Kits)

The stock DualSense face buttons (triangle, circle, cross, square) use a rubber membrane contact. Clicky button kits replace this with individual microswitches beneath each button, giving a tactile click similar to a mouse button. The result is a crisper, more responsive button press with a definitive actuation point.

These kits are universally compatible across BDM-010 through BDM-050, and likely BDM-060 as well. eXtremeRate is the primary manufacturer. Installation takes about 20 minutes and doesn’t require soldering — the microswitch PCB drops into the existing button wells.

Clicky Trigger Kits (Hair Triggers)

Hair trigger kits add microswitches to the L2 and R2 adaptive triggers, providing a shorter actuation point for faster firing in competitive games. These are more revision-sensitive than face button kits because the adaptive trigger mechanism housing changed between Gen 1 (BDM-010/020) and Gen 2 (BDM-030+).

Gen 1 kits fit BDM-010 and BDM-020 only. Gen 2 kits fit BDM-030 and BDM-040, and generally fit BDM-050 with minor adjustments. The BDM-050’s switch from a metal to plastic trigger hinge pin is the main variable. BDM-060 compatibility is unconfirmed.

Some trigger kits are “full” kits that include both face buttons and triggers in one package. These are revision-specific, so check the BDM compatibility carefully before ordering.

Custom D-Pads and Thumbstick Caps

Replacement d-pads and thumbstick caps are universally compatible across all BDM revisions. These are simple drop-in swaps that require opening the controller but no tools beyond a screwdriver.

Thumbstick caps in particular are an easy upgrade. Higher-profile caps or textured rubber grips can improve comfort and control precision. They’re also a simple way to refresh a worn controller without a full shell swap.

LED Kits

LED modification kits replace or add lighting to the controller’s face buttons, d-pad, thumbsticks, or touchpad area. These range from simple single-colour button backlighting to programmable RGB systems with multiple lighting modes.

eXtremeRate’s LED kits are confirmed compatible with BDM-010 through BDM-050. Installation typically involves connecting a small flex PCB to the controller’s existing circuitry and routing LED strips beneath the button cutouts. Moderate difficulty — no soldering required on most kits, but precise placement matters.

LED kits draw additional power from the controller’s battery, which will reduce play time per charge. The impact varies by kit brightness and number of LEDs, but expect a 10-20% reduction in battery life.

Performance Modifications

TMR / Hall Effect Joystick Upgrade

The most impactful performance mod available. Replaces the stock ALPS potentiometer joystick modules with contactless magnetic sensing modules, permanently eliminating stick drift. This is an intermediate-level soldering job — see our dedicated guide: PS5 DualSense Stick Drift: Causes, Fixes, and the TMR Upgrade.

TMR joystick modules are compatible across all BDM revisions (BDM-010 through BDM-060). The joystick module footprint is standardised.

Adjustable Tension Sticks

GuliKit offers a 720° adjustable tension TMR module that lets you customise the stick resistance. Tighter tension for precise FPS aiming, looser for relaxed play. These are premium modules (around £20-25 per pair) but combine the drift-free benefit of TMR with personalised feel.

Back Button / Paddle Attachments

Remap kits like eXtremeRate’s RISE system add programmable back buttons or paddles to the standard DualSense, providing additional input options without taking your thumbs off the sticks. These are more complex installations that involve connecting a remap PCB to the controller’s motherboard. Check BDM compatibility carefully — the RISE kit has different versions for different revisions.

Buying Shells on Alibaba: What to Watch For

If you’re buying replacement shells from Alibaba for repair or resale, a few tips from experience:

Always confirm BDM compatibility in writing before ordering. Listing titles are often optimistic. A listing that says “BDM-010/020/030” may only have been tested on BDM-020. Message the supplier and ask specifically which revisions the shell has been tested on.

Order samples before committing to bulk. A £6 sample is cheap insurance against receiving 100 shells that don’t fit your controllers. Test the sample on the exact BDM revision you plan to use it with.

Complete kits are safer than individual parts. A full shell kit with matching buttons and triggers, designed for a specific BDM group, eliminates the compatibility guesswork. Buying a shell from one supplier and triggers from another is asking for trouble.

Check photos carefully. Does the listing show the shell fitted to a controller, or just laid flat? Photos showing the shell on a controller are a much better indicator of actual fit quality. Look for visible seams, misaligned screw holes, or gaps around the touchpad.

Supplier reputation matters. Guangzhou Weiya (4+ years on Alibaba, high ratings) and similar established suppliers are generally safer bets than brand new storefronts. Check review counts and response times before committing.
